With growing evidence that music can play a part in helping people with dementia live happy and fulfilled lives after they are diagnosed, earlier this year Park Theatre in Finsbury Park, North London, introduced a new strand to their work for people living with dementia and their carers – Reminiscence Sings. This weekly singing class complements the Reminiscence drama workshops that have been running since 2016 and is part-funded by the Victoria Wood Foundation.
The class is led by Music Therapist, Gareth John from Chiltern Music, a company who specialise in working with older adults living with age-related illnesses like Alzheimer’s or dementia. The class also includes a ‘new friends’ initiative for the project whereby one of the theatre volunteers becomes a buddy to each of the participants and their carer. This creates familiarity for the participants and equally makes a connection for the carer that may help to combat the sense of isolation that is so often experienced.
The singing session runs from 11:30 – 12:30 and is followed by an opportunity to relax and socialise over a sandwich lunch in our café bar. Park Theatre welcome enquiries from anyone affected by dementia about the Reminiscence project.
